Bibliotel

Yesterday I had some time and browsed through some old books that I hadn’t looked at in years. I opened one of the books and out came a bookmark that instantly caught my attention.  On the top of the bookmark there is a symbol that is reminiscent of an opened book and next to the symbol it says Bibliotels – lesend reisen – reisend lessen (travelling while reading – reading while travelling).  There are actually hotels out there that cater to the avid reader. And I thought, we were the only place on this earth that offered tons of book to be enjoyed by our guests. Since this bookmark definitely  predates e-readers and the whole online internet craze, I used my modern technology and googled ‘bibliotels’ (a nice example for a portmanteau word btw) and  wahoooo, there are still many, many bibliotels in existence. To be found all over the world and one of them is right here in Oklahoma (The Stone Turtle)!!!!!  It makes me so happy to know that there are still people out there who enjoy a good book. Nothing can come close to the feeling of being totally enchanted by a good read, holding a real book in your hand while comfortably curled up on the sofa. It’s even better when it is rainy and dreary outside, or, as in Oklahoma, too windy.

So that is how I remembered many, many years ago – before the modern technological age had started, when a book was published called ‘The Never-ending story’ by Michael Ende. It was on my booklist to buy as soon as I had the time to get to a bookstore. This was in the 1980s. It was the age before instant gratification became the norm and I still remember how sweet the anticipation was to wait for something that one really desired. So, one evening, I came home from work and walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge. I was looking for stuff to make dinner and my eyes saw something totally foreign in a refrigerator:  ‘The Never-ending Story.’ Oh my, I was soooo happy  to see that book. But since my husband had been so sweet to go out and buy this book for me and create such a sweet surprise for me, I thought that he deserved some kind of dinner. Cooking dinner seemed to take forever.  We ate and cleaned up the kitchen and NOW, I could finally start with my new book. Oh what a joy! It was a rainy and dreary day outside, we didn’t have a fireplace so there was no fire crackling, but, nevertheless,  it felt so unbelievably good to curl up on the sofa with a nice warm blanket and a fluffy pillow and that much-anticipated book and begin to read. I read until the wee hours of the next morning when I finally decided it was time to get some sleep; after all, I had to go to work in just a few hours.

Often I wonder, if people still get to experience this simple pleasure in the day and age of instant gratification. When you miss out on the ‘Vorfreude’ (the pleasant anticipation while waiting for something you desired so much), miss out on the curling up on a sofa, miss out on having a real book in your hand where you can actually turn the pages, mark the pages, highlight areas, add notes. And strangely enough missing out on all the pleasant memories reading can give you. I never thought that something as mundane as reading a book can leave you with those warm pleasant memories that last a lifetime.

So, if you have the need to create memories that involve books and coffee, feeling warm and fuzzy, book a weekend in a bibliotel and enjoy every second of it. And remember – there is a bibliotel right here in Oklahoma – just call us for a reservation.

Happy Reading, my friends!

Hello, 2015!

Hello lovely readers!

Please accept our heartfelt wishes for the year 2015! We hope everyone of you has a wonderful, healthy and happy year!

As many of you may know, Hope's theme is fairy tales. It's such a fun project turning one of our vacation homes into something whimsical and special. It's a never-ending project of a small touch here, a small touch there and occasionally a larger project thrown in (like painting the exterior of Hope...). We have so much fun thinking of new ways to put love into our business. Our concept is different from all the other lodging places in the area. Most hotel chains in Lawton do not have a theme. They're chains after all. And the lodging in Medicine Park tends to be rustic (perfect for Medicine Park), but that's just not us.

Personally, I'm all about whimsy and spunk. And, I love bright colors! I also like thinking outside of the box, so there's a lot of upcycling at the Stone Turtle - Lodging. Sometimes I find furniture pieces that don't quite fit yet, so they get a temporary spot. Some furniture gets swapped between homes. Some stuff just fits right off the bat. Some pieces of furniture get a makeover. Most furniture and deco pieces get moved around many times before they find a permanent home.

Here's a little upcycle project you could find in Hope's Beauty and the Beast room if you booked a weekend stay at the Stone Turtle Lodging, or if you're in town for a Fort Sill Graduation!

Greetings from the Stone Turtle!

Danielle

Importance of Nature

Our location is pretty close to Lake Lawtonka. It's a super-short drive and bicycle ride to enjoy a walk (or ride) along the shoreline or even just to wander down the road connecting camp sites. We believe nature is essential to one's overall well-being. It's a way to recharge our souls. Enjoying, appreciating, and taking care of nature builds a connection that is holy. When that connection is lost, we aren't well. This concept is not new, of course, but it definitely seems to be forgotten in our society of working, buying, buying some more, and always going.

As we were strolling along the lake the other morning we were in shock as to how people left their campsites and the beautiful shore. How can we not take care of something so beautiful and perfect which was made for us?  How can we recharge when nature has been trashed? We believe that it's because that connection to nature is not seen.

In central Europe this connection has been cherished and cultivated. Place of nature, something left green, within a town or close to a town which is easily reachable offering a reprieve from the hustle and bustle from the hectic lives we live can be found all over Europe . It's a place to recharge. An emotional and mental retreat. In Europe they have many opportunities for the public to enjoy nature; to breathe fresh air! In the U.S., at least in our area, most land is privately owned and fenced in. Which is why living near the Wichita Mountains and the lake is such a blessing! We are able to enjoy nature, breathe in fresh air, and recharge our souls. In Germany they have a word for such a place. It's called a Naherholungsgebiet. Literally it means, close recuperation area. As far as we know, there is no term for this type of place in the U.S. other than park. But, it's so much more than a park.

These areas are meant for daily use (and appreciation). Something to be valued and not used and abused. To be cared for and protected. Not just for us, but for others to enjoy as well.So when we find such an area, let us be thankful and respectful. Enjoy it, but do not abuse it; A trashy area is not very recharging.

With the increasing use of technology (always being reachable), this type of place is even more important today than it was 10-20 years ago. As the Germans would say, nature is "Balsam fuer die Seele." Roughly translated it means that nature is a healing remedy for the soul Actively seeking out quiet and nature is important for our overall health. This is the main reason we do not offer cable or internet in our cabins.

"Study Nature. Love nature. Stay close to nature. It will never fail you."

Finding Cinderella's slipper

I cannot for the life of me recall just how we ended up on the decorating theme for Hope. Either I subconsciously love fairy tales or the universe does. Fairy tales (Oklahoma style) have been chosen for the theme of Hope mainly after we found that gorgeous gown and mounted it on the wall. One of our guests staying with us for a military graduation from Fort Sill inspired an awesome idea (thank you, by the way). The children were absolutely fascinated with the "Cinderella Room" of Hope. The fairy tale theme was then a done deal. I love it when the universe give clear signs. Now what's the story of Cinderella without the lost high heel? It turns out I have a hidden talent for shopping (or just spending money).

Greetings from the Stone Turtle,
Danielle
